Chlorine or salt pool?
Salt electrolysis does not remove chlorine: it generates chlorine on site from dissolved salt. The real choice is how disinfection is produced and controlled.
The essential difference
A conventional system adds disinfectant and adjusts dosage. A salt system uses an electrolytic cell to turn dissolved salt into chlorine while filtration runs. Both still require balanced water, pH control, filtration and physical cleaning.
| Area | Conventional dosing | Salt electrolysis |
|---|---|---|
| Disinfectant | Product is added to the water. | The cell produces chlorine from salt. |
| Equipment | Manual or automatic dosing. | Chlorinator, cell, controller and compatible materials. |
| Tasks | Test and dose regularly. | Test water, set output, check salt and clean or replace the cell as specified. |
| Investment | Depends on existing dosing equipment. | Upfront equipment and replacement parts; savings require a whole-life quote. |
What does not change
Filtration, circulation and cleaning remain essential. Temperature, bather load, rain and debris change demand. Automatic equipment must still be checked and does not make a pool maintenance-free.
Before converting
Ask a contractor to review pool volume, hydraulics, pump and filter, available space, metallic components, earthing, pH automation, replacement-cell cost and warranty servicing. Compare Alicante pool companies and our maintenance cost guide.
Which system suits your pool?
| Your situation | What to assess |
|---|---|
| Existing conventional setup in good order | Upgrade cost compared with improving its current controls. |
| Holiday home | Automation, checks during absence and response to faults. |
| Community pool | Water monitoring, records, professional service and applicable rules. |
| Older equipment | Hydraulics, materials, electrical installation and manufacturer requirements. |
A salt pool still uses chlorine. Its chlorinator generates chlorine from dissolved salt, and the system needs appropriate water chemistry and ongoing checks.
Costs and maintenance that are easy to miss
- Initial chlorinator and cell, with any required pH controller.
- Salt top-ups and other water-treatment consumables when needed.
- Cell, probes and component replacement according to the manufacturer.
- Electricity and filtration requirements for the actual equipment.
- Professional commissioning, calibration and preventive servicing.
Compare whole-life quotations rather than assuming one system always saves money. If the water deteriorates or equipment reports an error, test appropriately and follow the manufacturer's instructions or seek a qualified technician rather than simply raising output.
Common questions
Is a salt pool chlorine-free?
No. Chlorine is generated on site and remains the disinfectant.
Does a salt system need extra chlorine?
Specific treatments may sometimes be needed depending on water conditions and professional guidance. Follow the system instructions.
Can any chlorinator be fitted?
No. Pool volume, use, hydraulics, materials and electrical suitability must be assessed first.
