Planning a bathroom renovation in Alicante
Decide what problem the renovation needs to solve before choosing tiles or requesting a fixed price. A bath-to-shower conversion, upgraded plumbing and a complete refit have different scopes and costs.
What needs to change?
Photograph the whole room and note dimensions, ceiling height, doors, windows, heating and sanitaryware. Mention damp marks, slow drainage, poor pressure or damaged surfaces. A contractor needs to assess the cause before promising a finish; covering a problem with new surfaces does not automatically resolve it.
Consider who uses the room. Is access for a person with limited mobility a priority? Do you need space to assist a child, more storage or a bath? Roca’s renovation guide distinguishes targeted updates from complete works involving layout, plumbing, electrics and furniture. Tell companies your priorities, not only the visual style you prefer.
Shower conversion or full refit?
| Scope | Check before pricing |
|---|---|
| Replacing a bath | Drainage, available floor height, exposed wall finish, shower tray, screen, taps and edges. |
| Partial update | What remains, compatibility of fittings and the junction between old and new finishes. |
| Full renovation | Demolition, plumbing, waterproofing, flooring, lighting, ventilation, sanitaryware and cleaning. |
A level-access shower may be appealing, but its height, drainage and waterproofing must work in the actual room. Geberit describes different shower drainage and sealing components. A catalogue photograph cannot establish feasibility in your home.
The screen affects everyday access too. A hinged door needs room to open; a sliding door has a different entry width; a fixed panel requires attention to splashes. Roca explains common screen configurations for different spaces.
What the written quote should cover
- Preparation: floor and shared-area protection, removal of old fittings, demolition and waste.
- Services: plumbing, electrics, drainage and ventilation, specifying what remains and what changes.
- Wet areas: surface preparation, waterproofing, shower, falls, joints and finishing details.
- Finishes: surfaces to tile or paint, material brands and product references.
- Equipment: toilet, basin, furniture, mirror, accessories and screen with agreed sizes and models.
- Delivery: estimated schedule, staged payments, cleaning, final inspection, aftercare and taxes.
If the contractor cannot price a hidden pipe or wall until it is exposed, ask them to mark that item as conditional and explain how additional work will be documented and approved. A low figure may simply leave out more work.
Why a site visit matters
Room size and photographs cannot show every condition: access to the building, old pipes, position of drainage stacks, space to open a screen or whether the home has a second usable bathroom during work. Give the same information to several firms and ask them to state their assumptions. An estimate may change after inspection; find out how that process works before signing.
For a combined project, our kitchen quote guide helps separate the scope of each room.
Alicante checks before work begins
Alicante City Council publishes information on procedures for work in homes. What applies depends on the particular works. Ask the council or responsible technician before starting and agree who handles any paperwork and waste. In an apartment building, also discuss access, working hours and protection of shared areas.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a bathroom renovation cost in Alicante?
Without an inspection, one figure is not useful. The condition of services, demolition scope and materials change the total. Request quotes for the same work and check exclusions.
How long does it take?
That depends on the project, conditions found and material availability. Ask for the sequence of work and an estimated finish date after a survey and product selection.
Is replacing a bath with a shower always an accessible renovation?
No. Entry, level changes, suitable slip resistance, manoeuvring space and the user’s particular needs all matter. Request an individual assessment if accessibility is a goal.
